Our Story

Our Story

Our family comes from Austria and we were raised with Austrian traditions and food. Having been brought up with our Austrian grandmother's (Gram) cooking, we always paid attention as we cooked with her in the kitchen.

For years we prepared true Austrian dishes to our friends and family that were passed on to us from Gram. And today, we are even more pleased to be able to prepare these dishes for you. We think Gram would be proud.

We have traveled to Austria countless times and we visit the beautiful country as much as possible. Having made many friends during our travels, we have learned even more about our heritage and the Austrian culture and cuisine. It is an enchanting beautiful country with a wonderful history.

While you are here as our guest, we hope you enjoy some Austrian Gem├╝tlichkeit: friendly hospitality, coziness, and cheerfulness!

The Building

The Building

The grand building where our restaurant and Inn is located was built in 1900 for the Noble family of Adams. After sitting dormant for several years, the building was put on the market in 2009. By 2011, there was talk of tearing the building down, potentially losing a wonderful piece of architecture in our town. So, on a whim, we decided to purchase it and open an Austrian-American restaurant, tavern and Inn.

We named the restaurant after the Haflinger horse. The Haflinger is native to Austria and is a gentle and beautiful animal that we breed and have a passion for; which is quite apparent if you look around the walls of the Tavern.

At the Haflinger Haus, you are dining among our family and friends, and we welcome you to our table. We hope you enjoy our fine dishes, hospitality and cozy atmosphere.

We are located in Adams, MA in the beautiful Northern Berkshires. Located directly on Rte. 8, we are just minutes away from MASS MoCA, MCLA, Williams College, the Williamstown Theater Festival, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute and many other attractions. The Haflinger Haus is also only 25 minutes from Pittsfield, the Colonial Theater, the Barrington Stage, and Jiminy Peak Ski Resort.

The Haflinger Haus is located in a historic inn in downtown Adams, Massachusetts, that has over 100 years of history. It is family business owned and operated business and, on any given day, you may encounter three generations of the Sommer family working in various roles in the restaurant and inn. Even some of the recipes (particularly the Gulasch) are secret family recipes passed down from our great-grandmother.
